Joma Anderson, longtime resident of Gainesville-Haymarket, former federal worker, mother of two

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m., at Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant in Haymarket for Joma Lee Anderson, a long-time resident of the Gainesville-Haymarket area, who died Aug. 17, 2017, at Gainesville Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Born in 1946 in Arlington, VA, Joma received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lynchburg College. After marrying Mark Anderson and moving to Florida, she worked for the Social Security Administration. In later years she worked for the Prince William County Library and Giant grocery store chain.

Joma loved God, nature, her children, and others. She was loving and kind, fearless, smart, willful, opinionated, and fiercely protective of her privacy and freedom. She was generous to others who needed it when she didn’t have much herself, and she had a great sense of humor which often revealed itself when least expected.

She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew F. Smith, and brother Tommy Smith. She is survived by her children, Shawn (Heather Stroud) and Stacy; her granddaughters, Eveleyn and Willa; her mother. Shirley L. Smith; and by her siblings, Andrew F. Smith Jr., Wesley Smith, Andrea Smith Pinard, and Bradley Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Capital Caring Hospice or National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
